TYPES OF TESTS ACCORDING TO SCORE INTERPRETATION/FRAME OF REFERENCE

1.    Norm-referenced testing à performance is measured not with relation to others’ scores, but with relation to criteria for a particular unit of learning. To classify students. ex: TOEFL, IQ test, CAT, CTBS and SAT  (because it gives rank), to place the individual in rank continue room (range of rank).
2.    Criterion-referenced testing à performance is measured not with relation to teaching objectives, but with relation to group ranking.
Compare to the standard, so we can’t compare students, because we use criterion referenced test. Much closer or closer.

TYPES OF TESTS ACCORDING TO TEST CONCEPT OF LANGUAGE ABILITY
1.    Direct testing à to measure one’s ability directly in an authentic context and format.
2.    Indirect testing à to measure the abilities which underlie the skills in which we are interested.
3.    Communicative à

TYPES OF TEST BASED ON TEST FORMAT

1.    Discrete-point testing
to test single element of language or skill at a time.
2.    Integrative testing
to test two or more(often a number of)skills or features of language together.
3.    Power test
to measure the level of performance with sufficient difficulty and ample time to complete.
4.    Speed test
to measure the level of performance with many easy test items and a time limit. 
5.    Computer adaptive testing
using computer to present test content and can match individual testee’s ability. GMAT
6.    Standardized test
Test that has been experimentally evaluated and found valid and reliable.
