Group 1 (Fitria Ningsih’s
story)
“Her Lover” by Maxim Gorky
In this story discussed about a friendless, forlorn and ugly human being
calling herself Theresa, invents a boy friend from back home. She is aware of
how pathetic she is, but she stubbornly fights the loneliness of life by
accepting this invented boy friend as real. In addition, we, in our self-sufficiency
do not understand or even recognize the troubles of those around us, who need
our friendship and sympathy. Otherwise, we as human being should pay attention
to the people around us. Everybody needs somebody to live with that is why we
should be friendly with others. At last, I can conclude that we have to give
respect for other to avoid any others problem.
Group 2 (Halla Al Hartik’s
story)
“Dear Busy Son” by Bonnie Selberg
This story discussed about a father who always wait for his son. This is
a miserable story from a father who waits for his son that never comes to him
after he gets a job. From this story we can learn that actually our parents’
love for us is endless while we are as the children never can do like them. In
this story, the author showed that the father really missed his son so bad. He
just wanted his son will come and huge him. I can learn a lot from here because
it connects with our real life. There are many people whose live take apart
from their parents, and they keep missing for a long time for not meeting each
other. I cannot imagine how miss they are. Therefore, for those who still live
with their parents’ side should be proud of it. Still there is time, let us
spend it with our beloved parents.
Group 3(Damaris’ Story)
“Desiree’s Baby” by Kate Chopin
Desiree’s Baby is a story that leads us to learn about being rash. From
this story, we can see that there are symbolisms. One of the themes that the
author wants readers to understand was that nothing good could come from making
too rash of assumptions or being too quick to judge someone or something. These
themes reach deep into the reader’s mind and really makes the reader think
about the many issues of race in society today as well as the racial issues of
the past. The author tells with a general idea of bringing together these two
characters that are completely different and opposite of each other. Armand and
Désirée have many differences beginning with where they come from, their family
background, and their overall personalities. In society, it is a lot of real
fact that looks like with this story. Many people got problem with their
children just because of Rash. In addition, it is common happen around us.
Group 4 (Javas Afrizal’s
Story)
“Mujina” by Lafcadio Hearn
The story entitled “Mujina” is such kind of Japanese horror story that
is very popular in the slope of the province of Kii. The story tells about a
man’s experience when he passed by side of slope. At that time, he met a woman
who crouching by the moat crying. Badly, he was shock when he had been seeing
that woman had no any face. I can conclude that if we are walking in a dark
night and seeing a stranger, do not easily believe him/her. We should be
careful if we go somewhere alone. Then, if we connect to our real life,
actually it used to be a common story.
Especially in Indonesia, there are many kinds of ghost in different
terms. In addition, luckily, this such story is inspiring for the creative
people to earn money. For example, many movie producer who are interested to
make “Horror” as theme of their project. In addition, it success make people
interested in watching horror movie.
Group 5(Isnia Devianti’s
Story)
“Thank
You Ma’am” by Langston Hughes
In
the short story Thank you, Ma'am tells a story about a young boy who tries to
steal a woman's purse. When he thought he had it, he thought wrong because he
tripped and fell on the woman. The woman asked him if she let him go would he
run, he responded yes, so she did not let him go. The woman saw that the boys
face was dirty, and she did not want him going home like that. Later on, the woman
gave him ten dollars and walked him out of the house. The boy wanted to thank
the woman but before he did, the woman closed the gate.
This short story will be very memorable for me, because instead of the woman turning in the boy to the police, she instead took him with her. She understood the boy for trying to steal her purse, and she forgave him in a different manner without saying anything (for ex. feeding him food and giving him water to wash his face). I liked this story a lot because there was a lot of trust and a lot love. This story gives me a lesson that something bad does not always need bad response also. Becoming a patient person is a good way to solve problem.

6 (Faruq Aji’s Story)
The
Necklace by Guy De Mupassant
In this story discussed about
Mme.Loisel and her husband just a poor family who did not have much money. Mme.
Loisel borrowed the Mme.
Forestier Necklace to use in a party. Then, the necklace was lost. In addition,
the last, Mme. Loisel and her husband worked hard until ten years to buy
another necklace for Mme. Forestier. In my opinion, this is so interesting
story. It gives me a lesson that we must try to accept everything and always
thank god for everything that God give for us. In society we can see the story
that maybe same with Mme. Loisel’s condition. Sometimes, I find the people who
had the problem like this story, until they do an extreme way just for solving
their problem. Sometimes, for those who had debt with others, they want to a beggar
just for give their debt back. My last point is we should be grateful with
everything that we have.
Group 7(Fuad Fajar’s Story)
A Man Who Had No Eyes
This
story discuses about the both blind men who have different way to face their
destiny. One of them is a beggar and another one is a man with good work. Well,
even they are in the different condition, they are very different in their effort
of being survive. The beggar tries to get people sympathy with telling his poor
story. That it is the way for him to earn some money. However, another man
tries to build his life in order to earn money by his effort. Therefore, it has
to give the different result also. When you think that your life is poor, it
will be poor for you. Getting another responsible to survive will leads, you
depend to others. Then, you will lose yourselves.
Group 8(Istianah’s
Story)
The Cactus by O’ Henry
The story discussed about being honest. Actually, we had already known
that honest is the most important thing in life. Many kind of problem will be
existed because of lacking of honest. Therefore, in this story the author tries
to give an illustration where a couple has to keep their beliefs. When the
author creates a man who has high prestige, it will lead us to find a big
problem because of that. He cannot understand what exactly the meaning of
Spanish word (Ventomarme) in a cactus because he neither ask nor tell that he
cannot speak Spanish until he fails of getting his love. I can conclude that it
is better saying your weakness that keeping silent and lose your chance. We
should accept our condition, whatever it is, just the way we are.
